David Kroll

I love the paintings by Seattle based artist David Kroll
He has a book of his paintings released next month.

The book will be released 26th January 2016

I can identify with what David says in his statement, taken from his website, below.

I paint refuges, places to go to for solace. I want my paintings to be destinations of quiet and calm. However, this world is fragile. The elements in the foregrounds of my paintings are items carefully constructed, either by humans or animals. Yet, they are objects easily broken or destroyed. Birds represent messengers from the wild. They embody beauty and fragility. They are visitors that remind us of lands beyond, wilderness. The distant landscapes in my paintings are remembrances of the natural past, vaguely familiar and pleasing.
The natural world seems essential to me but I am puzzled by how one can integrate it into our urban lives. Although, we are neither able nor willing to return to an Arcadian state, we still need to have a relationship with nature. I want to add a sense of balance, order and beauty to a world that is weighted in the opposite.

In Miniature

I love all things miniature. They draw me in, hold my gaze, and challenge me to focus on their finesse
I am in awe of the detail in miniature objects, and for this reason I love visiting miniature fairs.
I visited one recently, and returned with this tiny book, printed in the 19th Century, when paper was a rarer, more expensive luxury,
and not the commodity that it is now.
It is a bible, (it was common practice for people to carry them on their person), in it's entirety, and in miniscule print.
You'd need a very strong magnifying glass in order to read it.

A Short History of Fairy Tale by Marina Warner

Once Upon a Time: A Short History of Fairy Tale by Marina Warner

 www.marinawarner.com/publications/bookdetailsnonfiction/onceuponatime.html

Marina Warner is one of the great experts on fairy tales, and in this book she sets out to create a simple map of the territory, ranging from the familiar to the unknown. Warner covers the diversity and strangeness of fairy tales, as well as explaining how they came to be sanitised and bowdlerised for young audiences. And she looks at how the same stories crossed borders and cultures, changing themselves to adapt to new contexts while proving robust and unkillable.

My bi-monthly illustrations for Intellgent Life magazine accompany the writer Robert Macfarlane’s musings on a particular novel.
In this current issue, Macfarlane explores the Napoleonic novels of Patrick O'Brian.
